Air & Sea Travel

Mobile coverage when travelling by Air or Sea:

As you may be aware, recent articles circulating in the news and social media highlighting the potential risks of not switching off your mobile device or enabling ‘Flight Mode’ whilst travelling by air or sea. On the back of this, we felt it important to remind clients how utilising air and sea satellite services whilst travelling differs from conventional roaming.

Here are some key points worth keeping in mind and sharing with your friends before they travel:

  • A mobile device can connect to some satellite network services, where the service is made available via air and maritime travel companies, automatically. There will be no authorisation required from the end user to connect.
  • When the device is not switched off, or placed in flight mode, mobile device applications can consistently update and run in the background, using data services without your knowledge, even if the device is stored away.
  • Roaming spend on satellite roaming services is not considered the same as mobile network roaming, it is not included within standard roaming bundles or services. In addition, out of bundle costs are in most cases significantly higher than standard roaming costs by destinations within set world zones, even seconds and lead to a hugely inflated mobile phone bill.
  • The EU spend cap of €50 does not cover these Air or Sea services at all. However, the Worldwide Data Cap covering data consumption in excess of £50 does, where you have opted in to this.

If you need further information or clarification on what is covered and what is not please don’t hesitate to contact support where we can help.

International Roaming – Vodafone Zones

If you’re a Pay monthly customer, some of the places we’ve listed are included in our Roam-further destinations. For these, you’d pay £6 a day on the days you use data, make calls or send texts – not Rest of World rates.

Before you leave

  • Check that your phone isn’t barred for use abroad by contacting support.
  • Check which zones are covered by your plan which are below.
  • Enable data roaming on your phone – or don’t, if that’s your plan
  • Set up PINs for your phone and SIM. If they’re stolen, this will restrict access to your device. To use voicemail when roaming, you’ll also need to set up a security PIN before leaving the UK.
  • Make a note of our 24-hour Lost and Stolen helpline (+44 7836 191 191) – free from any Vodafone phone even while you’re abroad (international call charges apply from any other mobile or landline) or contact our helpdesk immediately.

When you arrive

  • In most countries, you’ll get a welcome text from us as soon as you arrive and switch on your phone. We’ll tell you exactly how much it’ll cost you to use your phone there.
  • Your phone will automatically connect to one of the local networks. If this doesn’t happen, you can manually search for a network in the Settings menu on your phone:
Settings > Phone settings > Pick a network
  • Remember, you can call between Roam-free destinations and make calls to the UK and to the destination you’re in, at no extra charge. If you have Global Roaming Plus included in your plan you can also use your included international minutes abroad.

International Roaming – Making a Call

Find out how to do the things you need to do while you’re abroad

Calling and texting
Replace the first 0 with + and then the code of the country you’re calling. If you’re calling the UK, it’s +44 then the number. For example, 07774 477 000 would be +44 7774 477 000

Listening to your voicemail
Call 121 or +44 7836 121 121 from your Vodafone mobile (standard call charges apply)

Call the Emergency Services
Call 112 (free)

Fair usage policy
All our Unlimited plans include a fair usage policy – so when you use your mobile data abroad in our Roam-free and Roam-further destinations, you’ll have a maximum 25GB of data per month. If you reach this 25GB data limit, you’ll have two options to get more data: either wait for your monthly plan to refresh, or buy additional roaming data.
